Duplicate Finder

Problem… Some files with the same names aren’t duplicates. So a user can accidentally erase the supposed duplicates. (Like I did fifteen years ago. Very upsetting and very personal.)

And some files with different names that are duplicates can be very difficult, if not impossible to find. There are quadruplets, and two sets of twins in this image, but by glancing you could easily miss it.

Solution… Tell the app which hard drive and file type you want searched. Press a few buttons. Wait a few minutes while the program does a thorough search of each file and compares them to all other files, including file size and other file information. Then you get a list of duplicates.

You can click on file names to open them and verify they actually are duplicates before you decide what to do with them.

Duplicate Finder the Old School way

Duplicate Finder… Duplicate Finder helps you locate duplicate files that may be causing clutter and wasting valuable disk space. And revising a duplicate file thinking it's the original is very annoying.

The app performs two separate reviews:

Exact Duplicate Files

Files are compared byte-for-byte.

This means:

Same photos stored in multiple folders.
Same documents copied to different locations.
Same music or video files stored more than once.

If the contents are identical, Duplicate Finder color-codes and groups them together for your review. The colors make it easier to see which files belong together, especially when the list is long.

Same Name Files

Sometimes files share the same name but contain completely different information.

Example:

Budget.xlsx

Those names may look the same, but the files may not be the same. Duplicate Finder shows them separately and uses colors to make review easier.

Safety First

Unlike many duplicate removers, this app never automatically deletes files.

Files you choose to remove are moved to an Isolation Folder first.

This gives you another opportunity to review them before permanently deleting anything. Like some duplicate files can be part of other processes, and shouldn't be deleted.

Why I Built This App

Years ago I used a freeware duplicate file program that permanently deleted files that were supposedly duplicates. They weren’t. Some of those files were important and can never be replaced.

That experience is why this app was designed around review, control, and safety instead of batch deletion.

Bottom Line…

This app finds duplicate files. Lets you review them. Then the files you select are moved to an Isolation Folder where they remain available for review and eventual disposition.
